The event kicked off with a coffee bar where attendants got to know each other, share info about their companies, and find synergies.

The Circular Economy of Mezcal

The first presenter Luciano, who just returned from a trip to promote mezcal in Spain, spoke about the secondary economic impacts of mezcal.

En sus palabras “la economía circular busca minimizar el desperdicio y maximizar la eficiencia de los procesos en la cadena productivo agave / mezcal”.

You can watch his talk here!

Furthermore, he talked about how the income obtained from the circular economy supports the development of the local cuisine, cooperation among locals and tourism.

He shared that agave is a sustainable material that can be used for mezcal, honey and even paper. Simultaneously, it improves the ecosystem by benefiting pollination and increasing flora and fauna.

Here are 3 lessons that we can learn from Puebla's mezcal industry.

Origin Criteria of Mezcal

During her presentation, Elisa Lopez shared about the Origin Criteria of Mezcal, specifically the process followed by CIDAM to verify that it is safe and produced in an area designated by law. This covers the entire value chain from the agave plantation till the filling and labeling of bottles.

CIDAM’s presentation was joined by Zaida Selenia Coronado, who spoke about the aspects to note when carrying out an origin procedure.

In terms of the international dimension, exoap emphasised the value of tapping into the Free Trade Agreements with Mexico to select the best export markets. It is also important to consider the safety and labeling criteria to present the product to importers overseas.

Exoap further suggested the need to plan the bottle costs properly in the context of the Incoterms.

Finally, there was a demonstration using the exoap platform to obtain the Certificate of Origin within the framework of the FTA between Mexico and the European Union.

It allows us to analyze specific data regarding importers, exporters, prices, ports, and other information to make decisions in international trade.

This was followed by a demonstration to show attendees how to use the platform to gather data on the maritime export of mezcal.
