Matchmaking Embajadas

Embassies are not placed in a country exclusively to organize dinners and events in representation of the countries of origin. 

Not only are their tasks to carry out diplomacy, but to execute the agendas of their countries of origin in matters of commerce, environment, culture, education, etc.

For this reason, they carry out events with the purpose of connecting key stakeholders within specific sectors. These events are known as matchmaking events. matchmaking events.

A continuación incluimos dos ejemplos ficticios sobre cómo se pueden ver los eventos de matchmaking, así como los retos de realizar un evento de estas características y algunas de las tareas a ejecutar para una sesión exitosa.

First example: Embassies' matchmaking event for education

In this context, let's imagine that the Education Secretariat of the United Kingdom, is implementing an initiative to increase international student exchanges. The initiative would be appointed to the British Embassy in Mexico which would look for strategic universities, fit to embrace the programme. 

Although this first introduction could be in a direct way, the Embassy could also organize an event of matchmaking in which several universities could find the best fitting partner.

Second example: Embassies' matchmaking to encourage trade

Just like we mentioned previously, Embassies also support commercial matters. 

Let's imagine a situation in which the Spanish Embassy in Mexico was contacted by the fictitious Spanish Serrado Jam Association because many of its members want to start selling their products in the Mexican market. 

In order to organize the event, the Embassy would have to look for distributors in Mexico who could be interested in selling Spanish jams. The challenge is to find niche business partners that have import licenses and could meet the offer quantities the Association is looking to fulfill.

Just like the previous example, the Embassy could organize a of matchmaking matchmaking event to introduce Mexican and Spanish companies. . .

Some challenges to execute a matchmaking event

  • Embassies have several tasks in their agendas, while the organisation of a matchmaking event requires long hours of work.
  • Looking for interested companies in the target market could be difficult as they are often niche sectors.
  • Big cultural differences in the formality of the event. Aspects such as the confirmation process, the scheduling times, etc.
  • Effectively communication in a non-native language.

Some tasks to be executed by an Embassy in order to organize a matchmaking event

  • Look for local contacts, analyse data bases, navigate several websites, indicate in social media.
  • Filter out companies that are not fit for their objectives.
  • Follow a long contact process to reach out to A-level executives.
  • Send invitations, make calls, update confirmations, non replied and rejected invitations.
